Artist Profile: Yung Gemmy

By Cloud Malenko

The internet is a wonderful place if you want to find different artists or music to enjoy, and sometimes it happens without you even trying. I log into my Facebook this morning and see multiple posts from an enigma on my friends list. She looked attractive, so I’m like hey, why not? She had on some kawaii outfit and looking through her pictures I could tell she was a cool, open-hearted female. Video games? Anime? Cuteness? That’s what she’s about; yes, I’m talking about Yung Gemmy. This 16 year old rapper hails from Australia, and she doesn’t just rap; she makes beats too, pretty good ones at that, with tones of chiptune and 8-bit influences. I know you’re probably thinking, “Another female Australian rapper? Ugh, she’s gonna be like Iggy Azalea.” In fact my friend, she’s not. If you’ve heard of the Swedish rapper Yung Lean, I would say Yung Gemmy is like a female version of him. I go onto her Soundcloud and the song that has the most listens is titled “John Cena”. So I take a listen, and I can see why it’s her big hit right now; she flows over an old-school retro beat, and comes with straight bars and based references, and a catchy hook. And to top it all off her voice doesn’t sound that bad either, I don’t mind listening to it.

“You can’t see me, you can’t see me, John Cena, you can’t see me,

But for now, I’m lurking, like John Cena, you can’t see me…”
